All About
Long Beach

Long Beach, the city by the sea, has a rich history dating back to its early days in 1870 when developers built the first Long Beach Hotel, cottages, and picnic areas, in hopes of attracting visitors to this new resort community.

Two years later, in 1882, when the Long Island Rail Road came to town, Long Beach quickly became a thriving seaside resort community. A stroll through the tree-lined streets in the East End of Long Beach, only a block or two from the ocean, shows many stately homes, built in the style of Mediterranean seaside villas, reflecting the days when wealthy New York City residents built gracious homes a block or two from the sea.

Long Beach continued to evolve and thanks to William H. Reynolds, known by local historians as “the Donald Trump of his day,” the city began to flourish. After deciding that Long Beach needed a long boardwalk, Mr. Reynolds brought in elephants as well as human workers to put the pilings in place along the 3.5-mile boardwalk that joggers, walkers and beach goers still enjoy today.

Today, more than 100 years after its early days, Long Beach is home to 33,000 people who live in about 13,000 homes that dot the two square miles of land, touched by the sea and the bay.
